At school Diana excelled in athletics, music, and art. She did not enjoy math and science. One of her favorite things to do was to work with the elderly and the disabled. She loved to help others. When she completed boarding school at the age of sixteen, she went to finishing school in Switzerland. Finishing school is where girls from high society families learn about cooking, dancing, and attending parties. Diana didn't like the school and begged her father to let her come home. He finally agreed and she returned to England. After leaving school she got a job as a nanny and part time cook.
When Diana turned 18 she moved into an apartment with three of her friends. She didn't need money because her father paid for all of her expenses. However, she also didn't want to just sit around and attend parties. Diana took a job as an assistant at a Kindergarten. She really loved working with kids. She also took jobs babysitting for friends.
Prince Charles and Sarah Spencer.
In 1977, Sarah's relationship with Prince Charles led to the first meeting between Diana and her future husband.
Prince Charles had known Diana for several years, but he first took a serious interest in her as a potential wife in the summer of 1980 when they were invited to a country weekend, as she watched play polo. The relationship developed as he invited her for a sailing weekend in Cowes aboard the royal yacht Britannia, followed by an invitation to Balmoral Castle, Scottish residence of the Windsor family. Diana was well received by the Queen at Balmoral, Prince Philip and the Queen Mother. The couple then had several dates in London. Six months later, in February 1981, the prince proposed and Diana accepted. Personal accounts say it was truly and hopelessly in love with the prince.
Their engagement became official on February 24, 1981, after Diana selected a large £ 30,000 ring from a tray. The couple then faced the press to announce their engagement.
When asked if they married for love, Diana replied: "Of course." "Whatever love means," said the prince.
